About Southern Backyard Birds
Welcome to Southern Backyard Birds—your guide to the colorful, varied, and uniquely Southern birds that visit yards from the Texas Gulf Coast to the Carolinas, the Florida Panhandle to the foothills of Appalachia.
Why the South?
The Deep South is one of the most diverse and rewarding birding regions in North America. Painted buntings, roseate spoonbills, year-round hummingbirds, scissor-tailed flycatchers, and a dazzling variety of warblers, woodpeckers, and songbirds call this region home — or pass through on their long migrations.
Yet most birding resources are written for Northern climates. They don’t account for our heat, our humidity, our hurricane seasons, our fire ants in the feeder pole, or the snake that turns up at the birdbath. Southern Backyard Birds was created to fill that gap.
